Les Cheneaux Islands
A half-day stop or a full day if you kayak: drive from Mackinac Bridge (30 min) or St. Ignace (20 min). Not a base for more than one night unless you have a boat.
Les Cheneaux Islands are 36 islands in Lake Huron off Michigan's Upper Peninsula, sheltered by glacial channels. The mainland villages of Cedarville and Hessel are quiet port towns with marinas, antique shops, galleries and a kayak outfitter. Most visitors come for a few hours on a day trip from St. Ignace or Mackinac Island, or spend one night to paddle the calm waters between the islands.

- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
