Leongatha
Stay one night only if you need a South Gippsland base: the town itself is a 2–3 hour stop, and Wilsons Promontory is the real reason to be here.
Leongatha is the service town of South Gippsland, 135 km south-east of Melbourne at the junction of the South Gippsland, Bass and Strzelecki highways. It has a cinema, a small gallery, two pubs and a handful of motels — not a destination in itself, but a practical stop on the way to Wilsons Promontory, Wonthaggi and the Bass Coast. Most travellers pass through in an afternoon or sleep one night before driving further south.

- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No mobile coverage on Vodafone in Leongatha; Telstra and Optus work (check your plan).
- Rural roads at dusk and dawn carry kangaroos and wombats: slow down and avoid night driving outside town.
- Bushfire risk in summer: check the CFA and VicEmergency warnings before driving into the hills.
- Many kitchens close by 8–9 pm; eat before then or cook at your accommodation.
Leongatha is a quiet rural town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are wildlife on the roads at dusk, summer bushfire warnings and the long drive back to Melbourne after a late dinner.
