León
Give León 2–3 nights: one for the cathedral roof and museums, one for volcano boarding or the hot springs, and a half-day for the Pacific beaches at Las Peñitas.
León is Nicaragua's university city and its colonial rival to Granada, with the largest cathedral in Central America, more colonial churches than anywhere else in the country, and a volcano and a Pacific beach within an hour. The old centre is compact and walkable, so most travellers see the core in a day and spend the rest on Cerro Negro, San Jacinto or the coast. It is a backpacker and student town more than a resort one, and the economy has been depressed since 2018, so expect fewer services than Granada.

Scams and watch-outs
- Addresses are given as blocks from a landmark, not street numbers, and locals say arriba (east) and abajo (west) instead of east and west.
- Do not ring the cathedral bells on the roof; the climb is by a small fee and the stair is steep.
- Volcano boarding on Cerro Negro is a real fall risk: check the operator's boards, goggles and insurance before you pay.
- Afternoon wind makes the small boats and the beach road rougher; the last beach buses run until about 18:30.
- Street taxis pick up strangers; use hotel-booked taxis at night.
- Police checkpoints fine drivers on the spot; never drive after dark.
León is generally safe for tourists by day and the centre is busy at night, but use hotel-booked taxis after dark, keep phones out of sight in markets and on buses, and check current entry and protest advice before booking.
