León is the Bajío's leather city, 1.7 million people and a working shoe industry rather than a museum town. The colonial centre is compact and walkable, the airport sits 27.5 km away at Silao, and the city works best as a two-night stop between Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende. Come for leather prices, the November balloon festival and a Liga MX match.

Get around
Uber and Didi both operate. The SIT Optibús BRT ("Orugas") covers the main avenues with 52 stations and free transfers at San Jerónimo, Delta de Jerez and San Juan Bosco; pay with the bus card or cash. Buses stop only at stops, non-express buses must be flagged down, and you press the button to get off. Bike lanes are extensive and cycling is a real option in the flat centre.
