Lençóis
Base in Lençóis for 3–4 nights: walk to the waterfalls on day one, then take guided day trips into Chapada Diamantina; skip it if you only have two nights.
Lençóis is a small colonial diamond town of about 9,000 people and the main base for Chapada Diamantina National Park. The town itself is walkable in an hour; the reason to come is the waterfalls, caves and table mountains around it, most of which need a car, a guide or a long hike. Three to four nights covers the town, the walking-distance pools and two or three guided days.

Get around
The town is small enough to walk everywhere; cobblestones are uneven, so wear shoes with grip. For anything outside town you book a tour (transport and guide included) or rent a car. Roads outside Lençóis are potholed, so allow more time than the distance suggests.
