Lemont
Lemont, Illinois
Give Lemont one full day, not a night: quarry paths, a forest-preserve walk and downtown dinner. Sleep in Chicago or Naperville and drive out.
Lemont is a small village on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, about 40 km southwest of the Loop, built on limestone quarries that supplied Chicago's early buildings. What is left is a compact downtown of a few blocks, a quarry-turned-park, and two large forest preserves on the edge of town. It is a half-day to full-day stop for people already in Chicagoland, not a destination you fly to.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: sights sit 2–5 km (1.2–3.1 mi) apart and the forest preserves have no rail access. Metra's Heritage Corridor line stops at 101 Main Street with limited weekday service only — morning trains toward Chicago, evening trains back — so a rail day trip means an early start and a late return. Pace Dial-A-Ride covers local trips on demand, booked up to a week ahead.A car is the practical choice: sights sit 1.2–3.1 mi (2–5 km) apart and the forest preserves have no rail access. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Metra Heritage Corridor runs weekdays only, a few trains each way: check the timetable before you plan around it.
- Waterfall Glen and Sagawau trails get icy and muddy in winter; wear traction or skip.
- The quarry lakes are former industrial sites: stay on marked paths and do not swim.
- Downtown parking is free but small; weekend evenings fill up fast.
Safe for a day visit; the realistic issues are traffic on I-55, icy preserve trails in winter and unlit canal-side paths after dark.
