Leiria
Give Leiria one night, or a half-day stop between Lisbon and Coimbra: the castle and old town take 3–4 hours, then move on.
Leiria is a mid-sized central-Portuguese city, about 1 h 30 min from Lisbon by car and on the West line from Coimbra. Its one headline sight is the restored medieval castle on the hill, with the old town, two small museums and a paper mill below it. Most travellers use it as a stop on the Lisbon–Coimbra–Porto route or as a base for Fátima, Batalha, Alcobaça and Nazaré.

Get around
The centre is walkable: castle, Praça Rodrigues Lobo, the museums and the riverside are within 20 minutes on foot, but the castle hill is steep. Local buses (Mobilis) cover the suburbs and the station. For Fátima, Batalha, Alcobaça, Nazaré and Tomar you need a car, a bus or a train plus a local connection.

- The castle hill is steep and partly cobbled: wear shoes with grip, not smooth soles.
- Leiria's own station is on the West line, about 4 km from the centre; the North line stops at Pombal, not Leiria.
- Summer afternoons can pass 35 °C with little shade on the castle hill: go at opening or after 17:00.
- Many small restaurants close one weekday and shut kitchens by 15:00 and 22:00: check before you walk.
- Atlantic beaches near Leiria (Vieira, São Pedro de Moel) have cold water and strong currents: swim near lifeguards.
Leiria is a calm, low-risk city; the real issues are the steep castle hill, summer heat, cold Atlantic surf and pickpockets in the bus and station areas at night.
