Leigh
Give Leigh one full day and one night for Goat Island snorkelling; two nights if you want Pakiri Beach and a slow morning.
Leigh is a small settlement on the Matakana coast, about 1 h 15 min north of Auckland, and it exists for one reason: the Cape Rodney-Okakari Point Marine Reserve at Goat Island, New Zealand's first marine reserve, protected since 1975. The village itself is a general store, a café and a few roads. Come for the water, sleep one or two nights, and pair it with Warkworth or Matakana rather than treating it as a base for the whole region.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Kia ora or a handshake; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; overlong small talk before business
- Marae visit: Wait to be called on, follow your guide through the pōwhiri, remove shoes before the meeting house; avoid: Eating or drinking inside the wharenui; walking in front of speakers
- Tables and heads: Keep bottoms off tables and hats off tables; food stays away from heads; avoid: Sitting on tables or kitchen benches; touching people's heads
- Roads: Pull over at slow-vehicle bays to let queues pass; wave thanks; avoid: Stopping on the road for photos; drifting right after a stop
- Outdoors: Carry out all rubbish; use toilets; stick to tracks; avoid: Feeding kea and other birds; toileting outside
- Talk: Self-deprecating humour and understatement; avoid: Calling New Zealanders Australians; boasting
- Home visit: Bring wine or something to share; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving empty-handed to a 'bring a plate' event
- Names: Use Māori place names and pronounce them with care; avoid: Joking about Māori words or haka
Scams and watch-outs
- No petrol station in Leigh: fill up in Warkworth.
- Mobile coverage is patchy around Pakiri and the coast road.
- The marine reserve is fully protected: no fishing, no taking shellfish or rocks, and fines apply.
- Snorkel and wetsuit hire is limited and sells out on summer weekends: book or arrive early.
- Summer holiday traffic on the Matakana road is heavy on Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons.
Very safe. The real risks are the sea and the road: cold water and currents at Goat Island, no lifeguards at some Pakiri stretches, and narrow, winding coast roads with one-lane bridges.

No timed day plan for Leigh yet. Suggested stay: 1–2 nights. Build a day from the list below, mornings for the big sight.
