Leek
Give Leek one night, or a half-day from Stoke-on-Trent: buses stop around 18:00, so a car or an overnight makes the moors and Rudyard work.
Leek is a small Staffordshire market town on the edge of the Peak District, known as the Queen of the Moorlands. Silk and textiles paid for its red-brick centre; today it is a base for Rudyard Lake, the Churnet Valley and the southern moors. There is no railway station, so buses from Stoke-on-Trent or a car decide how much you can do.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- No railway station: buses from Stoke-on-Trent are the only practical public transport, and the last useful ones run early evening.
- Sunday and evening bus service is very limited; check the operator's timetable before you rely on it.
- Moorland roads and lanes can ice or flood; drive to conditions.
- Friday and Saturday nights bring drink-related noise around the Market Place; it is rarely aimed at visitors.
A low-crime small town; the real risks are unlit lanes and moor roads after dark, early last buses, and drink-fuelled noise around the Market Place on Friday and Saturday nights.
