North West, Leeds: neighborhood guide

North West Leeds is the biggest and most varied slice of the city, running from Burley, just outside the centre, out past Horsforth and Guiseley to Leeds Bradford Airport. Headingley is the hub: a student district built around a stadium that hosts both cricket and rugby league, with bars, restaurants and shops along Otley Road.

Closer in, Burley and Hyde Park are dense terraced streets with large student populations and some of the cheapest rooms in Leeds. Hyde Park Corner has vintage shops, boutiques and cafés, and Woodhouse Moor gives the area its main open green space. Kirkstall, on the river, holds Kirkstall Abbey. Further out the mood turns suburban and leafy: Adel, West Park, Cookridge and Holt Park on the Otley Road side, Meanwood with its park and woodland to the east.

Beyond the ring road the district becomes a string of towns — Horsforth, Rawdon, Yeadon, Guiseley, Menston and Otley on the River Wharfe — and reaches Ilkley and Ilkley Moor at the edge of North Yorkshire. These are separate places with their own centres, not city neighbourhoods.

Yes, if you are visiting a student, going to a match at Headingley, or want a cheaper room with a fast train into town. Burley Park and Headingley stations put you in the city centre in under 10 minutes, and buses along Otley Road and Burley Road run every few minutes. Headingley itself has enough bars and restaurants that you do not need to go into town every night.

No, if this is your first trip to Leeds and you want the museums, shopping streets, markets and nightlife within walking distance. Central covers that. North West also thins out after the student term ends, and the outer towns need a bus or train for anything beyond their own high street.

Practical points: rooms in Burley and Hyde Park are cheap but often basic, and student streets can be noisy at night (check). If you have a car, parking near Headingley is tight (check); the outer suburbs and the airport area are easier.

Headingley is the eating centre: Otley Road and the streets off it carry cafés, curry houses, pizza and burger places, and pubs with beer gardens. It is student-priced and busy in term time. Hyde Park Corner is the other cluster, with cafés and small shops, and Far Headingley has a handful of pubs plus the Cottage Road Cinema.

Kirkstall and Horsforth have their own local centres with pubs and takeaways, and the outer towns — Otley, Guiseley, Yeadon — have high-street cafés and traditional pubs rather than destination restaurants. For anything more ambitious, take the train or bus into Central.

Three stations on the Harrogate line serve the district: Burley Park, Headingley and Horsforth. All connect to Leeds city centre, and the same line continues north towards Harrogate, Knaresborough and York. Headingley station is a short walk from the main strip.

Buses are frequent. Routes 1, 6, 28, 95 and 97 link the centre with Headingley and beyond; 18/18A and 49/50 serve the Burley Road corridor; 33/33A run up Kirkstall Road to Horsforth, Rawdon, Yeadon, Guiseley, Menston and Otley; 56 covers Hyde Park, Burley and Headingley; 757 runs from the city centre to the airport and on to Otley. Off-peak the trip takes under 10 minutes; in rush hour allow up to 40.

By car, the usual ways in from the centre are Woodhouse Lane or Kirkstall Road, with Burley Road as a quieter alternative. Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) is inside the district near Yeadon.
