Lavenham
Go for one night, or a half-day stop if you have a car: the whole village is a 15-minute walk and the Guildhall needs an hour more.
Lavenham is a medieval wool town in south-west Suffolk where most houses went up between 1450 and 1500 and still stand. In 1524 it was England's 14th richest settlement, richer than Lincoln or York. There is no railway station, so you arrive by car or by bus from Sudbury or Bury St Edmunds. The village is small: you see the streets in 15 minutes and the Guildhall, Little Hall and the church in half a day.
