Lavasa
Skip Lavasa unless you have a car and a specific reason to visit: the planned hill town is half-built, controversial and a 1-hour drive from Pune with little to do beyond a lakeside walk and a meal.
Lavasa is a private, Italian-inspired hill town on the Mutha River, conceived as a resort city but stalled by legal and environmental disputes. The setting — green hills and a reservoir — is pleasant, but the town feels empty, with few completed attractions. Most travellers come for a half-day drive from Pune, a meal at The Waterfront Shaw, and photos of the pastel-coloured buildings. Environmentally conscious visitors may prefer to skip it.

Scams and watch-outs
- The town is largely unfinished; many planned facilities are closed or never built.
- Heavy monsoon (Jun–Sep) can cause road closures and landslides on the ghat road.
- No ATMs or banks confirmed on site — carry cash from Pune.
- The project has been criticised for environmental violations; some travellers avoid it on principle.
Lavasa is safe for day visitors, but the roads can be narrow and winding. Carry cash, as digital payments may not work everywhere. Avoid driving after dark on the ghat road.
