Lautoka
Give Lautoka half a day for the market and botanical gardens, or one night if you want a quieter, cheaper base than Nadi — not more.
Lautoka is Fiji's second city and the sugar port for western Viti Levu, about 30 minutes by road from Nadi Airport. It is a working town, not a resort strip: a covered produce market, a small botanical garden, a handful of Indo-Fijian and Chinese kitchens, and the Vuda Point beaches 15 minutes west. Most travellers pass through on the way to the Yasawas or use it as a cheaper bed than Denarau. One night, or a half-day stop, covers it.

Get around
The centre is walkable: bus station, market and most restaurants sit within 10 minutes on foot. Local buses run on timetables from the central bus station and are the cheap way to reach the suburbs. Taxis use government-set stage fares but agree the price before you get in. For Vuda Point, Saweni or the airport, take a taxi or rental car.

Etiquette
- Greeting: Say 'bula' with a smile; 'namaste' with Indo-Fijians; avoid: Ignoring a greeting on a village path
- Village entry: Come with a guide and kava, hats off, shoulders covered; avoid: Walking in alone or taking photos before the welcome
- Kava circle: Sit cross-legged, clap once before and three times after your cup; avoid: Stepping across the circle or pointing your feet at the tanoa
- Head: Keep your head lower than seated elders when passing; avoid: Touching anyone's head, even a child's
- Sundays: Keep it quiet near villages and go to church if invited; avoid: Swimming or loud music by village beaches
- Gifts and asking: Bring small gifts for hosts (kava, groceries, school supplies); avoid: Handing out sweets or money to children

Scams and watch-outs

Lautoka is a working city and generally calm by day; the real issues are petty theft after dark, unlit side streets, and taxis without a pre-agreed fare. Keep to the centre at night and use a metered or agreed taxi.
