Lauterbrunnen
Base here 2 nights for the valley floor and falls, then ride up to Wengen or Mürren; skip it as a day trip from Interlaken — the last train back is early.
Lauterbrunnen is a valley-floor village at 800 m, 20 min by train from Interlaken, under cliffs with dozens of waterfalls. It is the cheapest bed in the Jungfrau region and the transport hub for Wengen, Mürren and the Schilthorn, but the village itself is a busy through-road, not a postcard cluster of chalets. Two nights covers the falls, Trümmelbach and one mountain day.

Get around
The village is one street, Fuhren: walk it. KuBus 141 runs every 30 min from the station to Trümmelbach and Stechelberg (15 min) for the Schilthorn cable car. Bus 142 goes to Isenfluh for the Sulwald cable car. The WAB train climbs to Wengen and Kleine Scheidegg; a cable car from the station area reaches Grütschalp for Mürren. Bikes rent on the main street, 100 m south of the station.

- The BOB train from Interlaken splits at Zweilütschinen: sit in the front portion for Lauterbrunnen, the rear goes to Grindelwald.
- The station car park has minimum stays in winter (5 days) and summer (3 days); Stechelberg charges by the hour.
- Trümmelbach Falls is a cold, wet, enclosed gorge: bring a jacket and expect spray.
- Staubbach Falls can fade to a trickle by September; go after snow-melt or rain.
- Village shops close early; the Co-op by the station is the main grocery.
Very safe. The real risks are mountain weather, unmarked trail edges above the valley, and the road through the village: walk on the side lane, not the main road.
