Where to stay in Las Vegas: best neighborhoods and hotels

For a first visit, book the centre of the Strip: the stretch between Flamingo Road and Spring Mountain Road. You can walk to several resorts, shows and restaurants, and a taxi or rideshare to anything else is short. Rooms here cost more than downtown but save you daily transport time.

Choose downtown (Fremont Street) if your budget matters more than the Strip and you like a compact bar-and-music scene. Choose an off-Strip hotel near the airport or the Convention Center if you are travelling for work, driving out to national parks, or want a quieter, cheaper room. Choose a resort at the far south end (Mandalay Bay, Luxor) only if you get a good rate and accept that most of the Strip is a long walk or a rideshare away.

The Strip is Las Vegas Boulevard South, roughly 6.5 km from Mandalay Bay in the south to the Stratosphere in the north. It is not one neighbourhood: the centre is the busiest and most walkable, the south has the biggest pools and arena access, and the north is cheaper but a longer walk from the classic sights.

Centre Strip: Bellagio, Caesars Palace, The Cosmopolitan, Paris, Planet Hollywood and the Venetian/Palazzo cluster here. You can cross between them on foot, with bridges and escalators over the big intersections. This is where most first-timers should stay.

South Strip: Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Excalibur, New York-New York and the T-Mobile Arena area. Good for concerts, hockey, Allegiant Stadium events and resort pools; the trade-off is a 20–30 minute walk to the centre.

North Strip: Sahara, Resorts World, Fontainebleau and the Stratosphere. Rates are often lower and the Las Vegas Monorail runs along the east side of the Strip, which shortens the trip south.

Downtown Las Vegas centres on Fremont Street, about 6 km north of the Strip. Rooms cost less, the casinos are smaller and older, and the Fremont Street Experience covers several blocks with a canopy, live music and bars. It suits budget travellers, repeat visitors and anyone who wants a walkable night out without resort-scale distances.

Off-Strip covers a lot of ground. Hotels around the Convention Center and Paradise Road are practical for business trips and often quieter. Henderson and Green Valley, 15–20 km southeast, suit longer stays and families with a car. If you stay off-Strip, check whether the hotel charges for parking and how far the nearest bus or rideshare pickup is.

Advertised rates exclude two big add-ons. First, resort fees: most Strip and downtown hotels charge roughly US$30–55 per night for Wi-Fi, the fitness room and local calls, whether you use them or not. Second, room tax: Clark County adds about 13–14%. A US$99 room can land near US$150 for the night once both are included.

Midweek nights (Sunday to Thursday) are far cheaper than Friday and Saturday, and convention weeks can double or triple rates across the city. Booking direct sometimes waives the resort fee or throws in credit; loyalty programmes and package deals are worth comparing against the total price.

Parking is usually free at downtown and off-Strip hotels and paid at most Strip resorts, often US$15–30 a day for self-parking (2026 estimate). If you are driving, add that to the comparison.

Compare the total, not the headline rate. Add the resort fee and tax before you decide, and check whether the fee is waived for loyalty members or in a package.

Ask for a quiet room. Strip resorts have nightclubs, pool decks and construction; a high floor away from the Strip-facing side is usually calmer. If you are sensitive to noise, avoid rooms directly above a club or the pool.

Decide on a car before you book. If you plan day trips to Red Rock Canyon, Hoover Dam or the Grand Canyon, an off-Strip hotel with free parking can beat a Strip resort. If you are staying on the Strip, you can skip the car and use the monorail, buses and rideshares.

Book early for event weekends. Conventions, fight nights, the rodeo in December and big concerts sell out the centre Strip first and push prices up everywhere.
