Larne
Latharna
Give Larne one night only if you are on the Cairnryan ferry or walking The Gobbins; otherwise sleep in Belfast and day-trip the coast.
Larne is a working ferry port on the Antrim coast, an hour by train from Belfast. Most travellers see only the docklands, but the town sits between two of Northern Ireland's better half-days: the sea-cliff path at The Gobbins and the glens and villages running north to Glenarm and Carnlough. Treat it as a one-night stop or a coast day-trip, not a base.

Get around
Trains run about every two hours from Belfast Grand Central to Larne Town and Larne Harbour, roughly an hour. Goldline bus 256 runs hourly from Belfast. In town everything is walkable; for the coast, bus 162 goes north to Ballygalley, Glenarm and Carnlough four times a day Mon–Sat, and bus 170b goes south to Glenoe and Ballycarry three times Mon–Sat. A car makes the glens far easier.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- The Gobbins cliff path has been closed through the 2020s: confirm it is running before you build a day around it.
- The Larne harbour to Ballylumford ferry has been suspended since 2013, so Islandmagee is a drive round the lough.
- Carnfunnock Country Park is closed for redevelopment.
- Ferries have no land-based mobile signal: switch off data or you may connect at international rates.
Larne is a small, low-crime town and the centre is fine on foot by day and evening. The real risks are coastal weather, wet cliff paths and the harbour industrial traffic; take the usual care on nights out.
