Lara
Give Lara one night, not a base: Serendip Sanctuary and the You Yangs are the reason, and Geelong is 15 min by train for everything else.
Lara is a country town of about 16,000 people in the Greater Geelong region, 45 minutes by train from Melbourne and 15 minutes from Geelong. It has a small museum, a free wildlife sanctuary, a regional park of granite peaks and Avalon Airport on its edge. Most travellers pass through on the Geelong line; the ones who stop come for the wildlife and the walks.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Serendip Sanctuary and the You Yangs have no public transport; without a car you cannot reach either.
- Summer is bushfire season in this part of Victoria: check the CFA and VicEmergency fire danger ratings before any walk, and leave on a total fire ban day.
- Kangaroos and emus cross roads at dawn and dusk, including the freeway approach roads.
- Avalon Airport has no regular train or bus link to its terminal; book a taxi or drive.
- The Avalon Airshow runs every second year and fills every bed in Lara and Geelong: check the dates before booking.
A quiet, low-crime country town; the real risks are summer bushfire and heat, wildlife on the roads at dawn and dusk, and having no way out of Serendip or the You Yangs without a car.
