Laos has one railway that matters to travellers: the Laos–China Railway, a standard-gauge line running from Vientiane north through Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang and Oudomxay toward the Chinese border at Boten. Electric multiple units (EMU) do the passenger work, and the line is the default north–south link on that corridor. Vang Vieng is about an hour from Vientiane; the longer legs, such as Vientiane to Luang Prabang, run roughly 2 hours on the fast services.
The practical catch is tickets. Sales open only a few days before departure and popular trains sell out, especially around Pi Mai and other holidays. Buy in the LCR Ticket app or at a station counter with your passport. Bring the passport you booked with — it is checked against the ticket.
