Voykit pocket guide · United States
Lansing
Give Lansing one full day for the Capitol and museums, and sleep in East Lansing if you want walkable food and bars.
Lansing is Michigan's small state capital: a restored 1873 Capitol, a compact museum district and a river trail, with Michigan State University next door in East Lansing. Most visitors see the core in a day and use the city as a car base for Mid-Michigan. A car helps; downtown is quiet after office hours.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter is real: snow and ice are likely from December to March; pack boots and check road conditions before driving.
- Downtown Lansing empties after office hours — plan dinner in East Lansing or Old Town.
- Michigan State football weekends can fill metro hotels: check availability and rates before booking.
- Sales tax is added at the till; posted prices are before tax.
Lansing is a normal US mid-size capital: the centre is fine by day, use usual care at night and lock your car. Winter driving is the bigger risk — snow, ice and deer on rural roads.
