Lanigan
Skip as a destination: Lanigan is a 2–3 hour stop on the Yellowhead Highway, not a base. Sleep here only if you arrive late or want the campground.
Lanigan is a small service town in East Central Saskatchewan, about an hour east of Saskatoon at the junction of Highway 16 (Yellowhead Highway) and Highway 20. It exists for potash and farming, and its one sight is a heritage centre in the old CPR station. Treat it as a leg-stretch and a coffee, or a cheap bed between Saskatoon and Yorkton.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- No scheduled intercity bus or passenger train stops in Lanigan: check before you plan to arrive without a car.
- Fuel and food gaps: fill up in Saskatoon, Humboldt or Yorkton if you drive late or on a Sunday.
- Winter driving on Highway 16: ice, drifting snow and long gaps between services; check the highway conditions line before you leave.
- Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on the back roads.
Very low crime; the real risks are winter driving on Highway 16, wildlife on the road at dusk, and long distances between fuel and food. Tell someone your route if you drive the back roads.
