Langford

Base here only if you have a car: 1 night for Goldstream salmon and the lakes, or skip it and stay in Victoria, 35–45 min by bus.

Langford is the retail and business hub of the Westshore, west of Victoria on Vancouver Island. It has no old-town core: the draw is Goldstream Provincial Park, four swimmable lakes, the Galloping Goose Trail and big-box shopping. Most visitors pass through on Highway 1 or use it as a cheaper bed than downtown Victoria.

Get around

A car is the practical choice: sights are spread over 10+ km and buses run on few routes. BC Transit route 95 links Langford Exchange with downtown Victoria in 35–45 min; route 61 continues to Sooke. The Galloping Goose Trail is a paved or packed gravel rail trail good for bikes, and the city has marked on-road bike routes.

Language

English is the working language in most of Canada; French dominates Québec and parts of New Brunswick and Ontario. Québec's language law (Bill 96) makes French the language of signs, menus and services; a 'Bonjour' first earns goodwill, and in Montréal most people switch to English easily.

  • 'Eh', 'toque' (winter hat), 'loonie' and 'toonie' (CAD 1 and 2 coins), 'double-double' (coffee with two cream, two sugar).

  • Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume

Scams and watch-outs

  • Weekday rush hour on Highway 1 in and out of the Westshore is slow; add 20–30 min.
  • Goldstream Provincial Park parking is pay; free roadside parking along Highway 1 fills on salmon-run weekends.
  • Mount Finlayson has steep, exposed sections and drop-offs: skip it with young children or in wet weather.
  • Lake water is cold outside Jul–Aug, and there are no lifeguards at most lakes.
  • Big-box stores here are the same chains as on the mainland: don't plan a day around shopping.
