Lancaster
Lancaster, California
Give Lancaster one night as a Metrolink base for the Antelope Valley; the poppy reserve and the museums fill a day, not a week.
Lancaster sits in the high Mojave of far northern Los Angeles County, about 110 km north of downtown LA on Highway 14 and the end of Metrolink's Antelope Valley Line. It is a desert city of about 157,000 people with a walkable downtown boulevard, two free museums, a poppy reserve east of town and a musical road. Most travellers pass through on the way to or from Los Angeles, or use it as a cheap bed base for the Antelope Valley. Two nights covers the city; one night plus a poppy-season day trip is the common shape.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer afternoons reach 38–40 °C; carry water and do not hike the desert trails midday.
- Winter nights drop to around 0 °C and the wind on the valley floor is strong.
- Parts of the city have higher crime than the LA County average; avoid walking alone at night, especially away from the boulevard.
- The poppy bloom is weather-dependent: a good year and a bare year look nothing alike, so check the reserve's status before driving out.
- The Musical Road only works westbound in the left lane at about 88 km/h (55 mph); it is a 30-second stop, not an attraction.
Lancaster is a working desert city, not a resort: the boulevard and hotel strips are fine by day, but avoid walking alone after dark and lock the car. Heat, wind and long empty roads are the bigger risks than crime.
