Lalsk is a former trade town of about 2,900 people in the north of Kirov Oblast, near the Vologda and Arkhangelsk borders. Its 18th- and 19th-century churches and wooden merchant houses survive largely unchanged, and almost no tourists come. There is no rail line and effectively no hotel, so the trip is a day visit from Luza, 30 minutes away by bus.

Get around
Lalsk is tiny and flat: everything in the centre is walkable in 15–20 minutes. Streets are mostly unpaved with wooden board sidewalks, so wear shoes you do not mind getting muddy. There is no local bus service inside town.

- No rail station: reach Lalsk via Luza by bus or by car.
- Buses between Luza and Lalsk run about ten times on weekdays and four times on weekends and holidays; confirm times at the Luza bus station.
- Local roads are unpaved in sections and can be impassable in spring thaw and autumn rain.
- Some churches are abandoned or in ruins; do not enter unsafe structures.
- Alcohol is a visible problem in the evening and on weekends: sightsee by day.
Lalsk is quiet and not known for crime, but it is a poor, remote town: expect some drinking in the evening and on weekends, keep to daylight hours and do not walk unlit streets at night.
