Lakewood
Lakewood Township
Give Lakewood half a day or one night as an inland stop between the Jersey Shore beaches and I-195; it is not a beach town and has little tourist lodging.
Lakewood is an inland Ocean County township of about 93,000 people, roughly 15–20 minutes by car from the northern Jersey Shore beaches and about an hour from both New York and Philadelphia via the Garden State Parkway or I-195. It is best known today as a large Orthodox Jewish community, and its visitor sights are modest: a university arboretum, a restored 1922 theatre, two county parks and a minor-league ballpark. Come for a half day, a ballgame or a night between shore stops — not as a beach base.

Get around
A car is the realistic way to move around: sights are spread over several km and sidewalks are missing on some roads, including US-9 south of downtown. NJ Transit buses (routes 130, 132, 136, 139 from New York; 317 from Philadelphia) stop at the Lakewood Terminal, and Academy Bus also serves the town. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Not a beach town: the ocean is a 15–20 min drive east, and summer beach traffic on NJ-70 and the Parkway is heavy.
- Some roads lack sidewalks, especially US-9 south of downtown and undeveloped areas — walk with care after dark.
- Lodging is limited and can fill around Jewish holidays and BlueClaws home games; book ahead.
- Many businesses close for the Jewish Sabbath from Friday afternoon to Saturday night — plan meals and errands around it.
Lakewood is a normal suburban township and daytime sightseeing is low-risk. The real issues are traffic on US-9 and NJ-70, missing sidewalks in places, and unlit stretches after dark — drive or use a rideshare at night.
