Lakeside
Lakeside, Ohio
Go for 2–3 nights inside the gates in summer (late May–early Sep); outside the season it is a quiet lake village you can see in half a day.
Lakeside is a one-square-mile Methodist summer retreat founded in 1873 on the Marblehead Peninsula, run as a gated community for an 11-week season from about Memorial Day to Labor Day. A gate pass buys access to the pier, parks, auditorium and a packed daily schedule of concerts, lectures and classes. It is a dry, smoke-free community: no alcohol is sold or consumed on Association property. Most visitors walk or cycle; cars stay parked.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- In season you must buy a gate pass to enter; it covers amenities and the daily programme.
- Lakeside is dry: no alcohol served in its restaurants or consumed on Association property, and smoking is banned.
- A code of conduct applies to visitors as well as residents.
- Art classes and many activities sign up on Sunday afternoon — plan your week around that.
- No trains have served Lakeside since the 1960s; the nearest rail station is Sandusky, about 18 miles away, then a taxi.
- Most businesses and the programme shut outside the summer season.
Very safe: a small, gated, dry community where the real risks are summer storms on the lake, bicycles and golf carts sharing narrow paths, and heat on exposed walks. 911 works everywhere.
