Lakeland is Polk County's largest city, sitting on Interstate 4 between Tampa and Orlando. Its single unmissable sight is Florida Southern College, which holds the world's largest one-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright buildings. The rest is a compact, walkable downtown around Lake Mirror, a spring-training ballpark and a drive-in cinema. Most travellers pass through on the way to Walt Disney World or the Gulf beaches; a night here is enough for the Wright campus, the lake walk and dinner.

Get around
A car is the default: sights are spread over several kilometres and sidewalks are patchy outside downtown. Citrus Connection runs a small local bus network, and buses leave from outside the Amtrak station. Downtown and the Lake Mirror loop are walkable in about 30 minutes end to end. Rideshare and taxis cover short hops; rental desks sit on Memorial Blvd and at the airport.
