Stay one night, two if you want a clear-sky stargazing tour: the village is walkable in an hour and the night sky is the reason you came.
Lake Tekapo is a small Mackenzie Country village on a turquoise glacial lake, 2.5 hours by road from Christchurch and 3 hours from Queenstown on State Highway 8. Everything in the village is within walking distance and there is no public transport. Most travellers use it as one overnight stop on the Christchurch–Queenstown drive; two nights buys a second chance at a clear sky, which is the whole point of the place.

Get around
Walk. The village is compact and flat, and every sight, café and shop is within about 20 minutes on foot. There is no public transport in Lake Tekapo, so a car or a booked shuttle is needed for Mt John, the Peninsula Walkway and Mt Dobson or Roundhill ski fields. Fuel and a small supermarket are in the village; fill up before heading to Aoraki/Mount Cook or Omarama.

Scams and watch-outs
- No public transport: without a car you are limited to the village and booked tours.
- Weather changes fast; alpine roads can close with snow or ice even in shoulder season. Carry chains in winter and check road status before driving.
- Stargazing tours cancel on cloud. Book the first night of a two-night stay so you have a backup.
- Avoid the full moon for the darkest skies; the best window is roughly five days after full moon to ten days before the next.
- The Mt John access road is closed outside Astro Café hours and in bad weather.
- Book beds well ahead in Dec–Feb and on winter ski weekends; the village is small and fills up.
One of the safer stops in New Zealand: the real risks are alpine weather, black ice and unlit roads at night, not crime. Walk with a torch after dark, keep left on the one-lane bridges and check the road status before driving to Mt Cook.
