Lake Placid is a small Florida Heartland town of about 1,900 people between Lake June-in-Winter and Lake Istokpoga, on US-27 between Sebring and Okeechobee. Its draw is a walkable downtown of more than forty painted murals plus a caladium-growing belt that supplies most of the world's bulbs. Two to four hours covers the centre; a night makes it a calm base for the lakes and the state park.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: the town spreads between two lakes and the state park is a drive out Daffodil Rd. Downtown itself is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end, and the mural route is on foot. No local bus network worth planning around; check before relying on one.
