Lake Macquarie
Give Lake Macquarie 2 nights with a car: lake beaches and the Fernleigh Track on day one, Caves Beach and Catherine Hill Bay on day two. Without a car, base in Newcastle and day-trip in.
Lake Macquarie is a separate city of about 214,000 people wrapped around the largest permanent saltwater lake in the Southern Hemisphere, an hour north of Sydney and joined at the hip with Newcastle. It is a spread-out, car-first place: suburbs ring the lake, the train line runs on the western side only, and the best of it is water, bush and beach rather than a compact centre. Two nights is the useful length; one night works if you are breaking the Sydney–Newcastle drive.

Get around
A car is the practical answer: suburbs are 10–25 minutes apart and buses are thin. The Central Coast & Newcastle line runs down the western side only — Fassifern for Toronto, Wyee for Morisset — with no track on the eastern shore. Cycling works on the Fernleigh Track and around the flatter southern suburbs; the northern suburbs are hilly.
See and do
Known for
- Lake Macquarie, the Southern Hemisphere's largest permanent saltwater lake
- Fernleigh Track rail trail
- Caves Beach and Catherine Hill Bay
- Wild kangaroos at Morisset
- Swansea channel fishing
Day trips
| Where | How | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Newcastle | M1 or the Central Coast & Newcastle line from Fassifern | 30–45 min |
| Maitland | M1 then the New England Highway, or train via Hamilton | About 1 h |
| Cessnock and the Hunter Valley | M1 then the Hunter Expressway | About 1 h |
| Sydney | M1 south, or the train from Fassifern or Wyee | 1.5–2 h |
Sleep
- Belmont and Marks Point
- Lake foreshore, cafés and the Fernleigh Track trailhead; good for a first visit with a car.
- Warners Bay
- North-east end of the lake, The Esplanade cafés, easy run into Newcastle.
- Charlestown
- The self-styled CBD: Charlestown Square shopping, apartments, no water views.
- Swansea and Caves Beach
- Peninsula with lake on one side and ocean beaches on the other; quietest of the four.
- Toronto
- Main centre on the western shore; closest to Fassifern station.
Language
English everywhere, with a fast, informal Australian style: shortened words (arvo, servo, brekkie), 'mate' for anyone and irony as default. Place names across the country come from Aboriginal languages, and signs increasingly use dual names.
- Ask what a place is called in the local language on tours; many parks now use dual names (Uluru / Ayers Rock, K'gari / Fraser Island).
- 'How are you going?' is a greeting, not a question needing a full answer.
Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Morisset kangaroos are wild: do not feed or crowd them, they can scratch and kick.
- Caves Beach caves are walkable only around low tide; check the tide before you go.
- Buses are infrequent and stop early; without a car, plan around the train line.
- Summer school holidays fill lakefront accommodation and beaches; book ahead.
- Swim between the flags at patrolled ocean beaches; the lake is calm but the Swansea channel runs fast.
Low-risk area: the real hazards are driving distances after dark, wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk, and rip currents at unpatrolled ocean beaches. Swim between the flags, keep back from the Morisset kangaroos, and check the tide before Caves Beach.
