Lake Louise
Stay 1–2 nights in the village, not at the lake: see Lake Louise before 08:00, then shuttle to Moraine Lake the same morning.
Lake Louise is a glacial lake and a small village inside Banff National Park, 186 km west of Calgary and 56 km from Banff on the Trans-Canada Highway. The lake itself is a two-hour stop; the village is a base for Moraine Lake, the Icefields Parkway and the ski hill. Most people need one night, two if they add a hike or a winter activity.

Get around
A car is the easiest way to reach trailheads and the Icefields Parkway. For the lakeshore and Moraine Lake, park at the Lake Louise Ski Resort Park and Ride and use the Parks Canada shuttle, booked in advance. Roam Transit 8X and 8S link Banff and Lake Louise. Private vehicles cannot drive to Moraine Lake.

Scams and watch-outs
- Moraine Lake has no private vehicle access: shuttle, Roam Transit or a commercial bus only.
- Lakeshore parking fills before sunrise in summer and costs about $36.75 (2025); the Parks Canada shuttle also sells out, so reserve ahead.
- This is bear country: carry bear spray on trails, make noise, and keep food sealed and out of the car.
- Cell coverage is patchy on the Icefields Parkway and side trails; download offline maps.
- Winter roads can be icy and some trails close for avalanche control: check Parks Canada closures before you drive.
Very safe for tourists; the real risks are wildlife on trails, cold water, fast-changing mountain weather and winter driving. Carry bear spray, tell someone your route, and check Parks Canada closures.
