Lake Cargelligo
Go for one night if you are already driving the Central West loop; skip as a standalone destination — it is 5 h from Sydney and the town is small.
Lake Cargelligo is a small inland town on a lake at the edge of the NSW outback, about 5 h drive from Sydney and 1 h 30 min from Condobolin. It is a birdwatching, fishing and boating stop rather than a sightseeing base. Most travellers pass through on a Central West road trip and stay one night.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No passenger train; the line is freight only.
- Fuel and supplies are limited — fill up in Condobolin or Parkes.
- Summer heat: carry water and avoid walking midday.
- Kangaroos and emus on the road at dusk and dawn.
- Mobile coverage is patchy outside town.
A quiet country town; the real risks are heat, distance between fuel stops and wildlife on the road at dusk. Tell someone your route if you drive the back roads.
