Skip Laibin as a base unless you are heading to Jinxiu's Yao mountain scenery: one night in Xingbin, or pass through by rail between Nanning and Guilin.
Laibin is a prefecture-level city in central Guangxi, on the Hunan-Guangxi rail line between Nanning and Guilin, and it markets itself as a Yao cultural centre. The urban core is a plain workaday city with a free museum and a theatre; the reason to stop is Jinxiu Yao Autonomous County to the east, where Lotus Mountain and Chapel Mountain rise above 1,300 m. Most travellers pass through on the train and never get off.

Laibin is a low-crime city by Chinese standards; the real risks are summer heat and rain, mountain roads in Jinxiu, and taxis with no meter running — ask for the meter or agree the fare first.
