Where to eat in Lagos: local dishes, markets and neighborhoods

Lagos is small enough to walk between the old town, the marina and Meia Praia, so the choice is less about distance and more about what you want to spend and when you eat. Tascas and pastelarias cover breakfast and lunch cheaply; the marina and beachfront restaurants are for a slower seafood dinner.

The Algarve kitchen is built on fish and seafood, and Lagos sits right in it. Cataplana de marisco is the dish to order for two: a seafood stew cooked in a hinged copper pan, sometimes with pork, served with bread to mop up. Arroz de marisco is the soupy seafood rice version, and polvo à lagareiro is roast octopus with olive oil, garlic and punched potatoes. Grilled fish sold by weight is the local everyday choice; ask the price per kilo before ordering.

For a cheap, filling lunch, look for the prato do dia on a chalkboard outside a tasca. It is usually a meat or fish plate with rice, potatoes or salad, and often includes soup and a drink. These places cluster in the lanes of the old town and around the municipal market, away from the marina front. Bifanas and prego rolls in a pastelaria are the quick option between beach and sightseeing.

The municipal market is worth a morning visit for fruit, cheese, olives and fish; it is also the cheapest way to assemble a picnic for the beach. For sweets, the Algarve's Dom Rodrigo — egg and almond threads in a foil wrapper — is the regional one to try, alongside the ubiquitous pastel de nata.

Dinner is where prices climb. The marina and the Meia Praia strip charge for position, and a seafood dinner for two with wine can reach €40–70 (2026 estimate). Inland lanes and streets behind the main squares usually cost less for the same fish. Vegetarian food exists but is thinner than in Lisbon or Porto: soups and rice dishes often use fish stock or meat stock, so ask.
