Everything the tour says, in order. Read it instead of listening if you prefer.

  1. Before you start

Welcome to the Lekki (Nike Art Gallery) audio walk in Lagos. 3 stops: Lekki Conservation Centre, Nike Art Gallery and Lekki Arts and Crafts Market. Half-day cluster: the Nike Art Gallery in Lekki Phase 1; go by car with a fixed return time; traffic on the Lekki road makes it a morning-only trip.

The Nike Art Gallery block in Ikate, Lekki Phase 1 (approximate bounds; field-verify). Underfoot: paved; slope: flat; shade: medium.

Lagos is a city of islands, a lagoon and bridges, built on a slave-trade port, a colonial capital and an oil-era boom, and now the loudest cultural engine in West Africa.

Before you start: Go with a driver who waits; do not walk the road outside. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.

  2. 1. Lekki Conservation Centre

Stop 1 of 3: Lekki Conservation Centre.

Go early by car with a driver who waits: a wetland and forest reserve with a canopy walkway of about 400 metres; 90 minutes; the road east gets slow after 09:00.

East along the coast lies Lekki, a long peninsula of new estates, malls, galleries and beaches reached by the Lekki–Ikoyi Link Bridge and the expressway; its growth is the story of the last twenty years and its congestion is the price. For a visitor the working rule is to treat each district as its own day: cross the bridges off-peak, and do not try to combine Lagos Island with Lekki in one morning. Victoria Island's banks and hotels, the Lekki–Ikoyi Link Bridge with its cable-stayed spans, and the towers planned for Eko Atlantic show a city that builds upward and outward at speed, often ahead of drains, pavements and power.

Stay on the paths and walkways; do not feed animals. Quiet before 10:00 on weekdays; busy on weekends and school days.

Walk:Next, stop 2: Nike Art Gallery. This leg is usually a ride, not a walk, about 30 minutes. The next stop is about 6.2 km to the west. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  3. 2. Nike Art Gallery

Stop 2 of 3: Nike Art Gallery.

Go in the morning by car with a driver who waits: a multi-floor gallery of Nigerian art and textiles in Lekki; 60–90 minutes; the road out gets slow after 15:00.

Visual art is strong too: the Nike Art Gallery, founded by the batik artist Nike Davies-Okundaye, holds thousands of works over five floors, galleries and cultural centres such as Terra Kulture host exhibitions, theatre and readings, and events like Art X Lagos and the Lagos Photo Festival fill the autumn calendar.

Ask before photographing works; buying prices are negotiable, not fixed. Quiet in the morning; busy weekends. Five floors of Nigerian art and textiles from one of the country's best-known batik artists. Go in the morning: the road out of Lekki gets slow after 15:00. Prices are marked; the shop is a fair guide to what things cost.

Walk:Next, stop 3: Lekki Arts and Crafts Market. This leg is usually a ride, not a walk: short car ride, about 8 minutes. The next stop is about 1.3 km to the west. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  4. 3. Lekki Arts and Crafts Market

Stop 3 of 3: Lekki Arts and Crafts Market.

Go in the morning with a driver who waits: rows of carvers, bead sellers and fabric stalls in Lekki; 45–60 minutes; counter the first price and carry small notes.

The three main bridges between the mainland and the islands, and the Lekki–Epe expressway, are the choke points.

Keep phones and bags out of sight and in front. Quiet before 11:00; busy at weekends. Carvings, masks, beads, bronzes, batik and adire fabric are the main goods; quality varies stall to stall. Start your counter offer at about half; settle around two-thirds; walk away politely if it does not move. Ask whether an item can be shipped or fits in your bag; big carvings cost a lot to move. Ask before photographing sellers.

  5. End of the walk

That's the end of the Lekki (Nike Art Gallery) walk. To carry on, Victoria Island (Terra Kulture) is about 45 minutes away (car west).
