Lacombe
Give Lacombe half a day: walk the 40-mural downtown and the 1902 blacksmith shop, then sleep in Red Deer 25 km south or push on to Edmonton.
Lacombe is a town of about 13,000 in the parkland of central Alberta, 25 km north of Red Deer on Highway 2, roughly 1 h 30 min by car from either Edmonton or Calgary airport. It is a preserved prairie main street — a 1904 flatiron block, a working blacksmith shop from 1902, a Governor General's birthplace — rather than a destination you build a trip around. Most travellers see it as a two-to-three-hour break on the Edmonton–Calgary drive, or as a quieter, cheaper bed than Red Deer.

Get around
A car is the practical answer: sights sit on Highway 2A and out in the county, and there is no useful local transit for visitors. Downtown itself is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Taxis exist but are thin; book ahead for an early airport run.

Known for
- Historic downtown and its 40 back-alley murals

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter driving: Highway 2 can ice over and whiteouts close it; check Alberta 511 before leaving.
- Distances are long and fuel stops are sparse on county roads; fill up in town.
- Many county attractions (bird farm, corn maze, ranch) are seasonal and close outside summer — check before driving out.
- Sales tax is added at the till; posted prices are before tax.
Very safe for a town of its size; the real risks are winter driving on Highway 2, deer and moose on county roads at dusk, and long gaps between services.
