La Serena

La Serena is Chile's beach-and-architecture stop on the northern coast, about 470 km north of Santiago and the gateway to the Elqui Valley. The historic centre is compact and walkable; the beaches run for kilometres south of town. Most travellers come for 2 nights, or 3 if they add an observatory tour or pisco village.

Get around
The centre is walkable. Local buses and colectivos run along Avenida del Mar to the beaches; taxis and ride-hailing cover the rest. Buses to Vicuña and the Elqui Valley leave from the bus terminal several times a day.
