La Rochelle is a small Atlantic port city where the whole historic core fits inside a 20-minute walk: the Vieux Port, three medieval towers, the arcaded streets behind the clock gate and a market hall. Two nights covers the city and one island or beach day. It is a TGV stop 3 hours from Paris, not a base for the whole coast.

Get around
Walk the old town and harbour. Yélo buses cover the rest: single ticket €1.50 with one transfer inside an hour, 24-hour pass €5. Yélo bike hire needs registration at the Place de Verdun kiosk with ID and a card deposit; short hires are cheap but cannot be taken onto Île de Ré. A ferry links the Vieux Port with Port des Minimes, about €3.
