La Malbaie
Stay 2 nights: one for the Manoir, casino and Pointe-au-Pic shore, one for Cap-à-l'Aigle and Mont Grand-Fonds. A car is close to essential.
La Malbaie is a small Charlevoix town on the north shore of the St. Lawrence, 141 km east of Québec City on Route 138. It has been a resort since the 1760s and hosted the 2018 G7 summit. Two nights covers the shore, the gardens and one mountain day; three if you add whale watching or the Charlevoix train. Without a car you are limited to the bus stops and the town centre.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Distances between sectors are long: without a car, plan around the four bus stops.
- Many gardens, the forge and the observatory close outside Jun–Oct: check dates before booking.
- The casino and Manoir Richelieu sit on a hill above the shore; the walk back up is steep.
- Cell coverage is patchy on Route 362 and around Mont Grand-Fonds.
Very safe for a small resort town; the real risks are winter driving on Route 138 and 362, moose on the road at dusk, and cold water along the shore. 911 for anything urgent.

French is the everyday language; a short bonjour before a question goes a long way. Tipping 15–20% at restaurants is expected.
