La Bisbal d'Empordà is the ceramics capital of Catalonia and the market town of the Baix Empordà, 13 km from the nearest train station at Flaçà and about 45 km from Girona airport. The old centre is small: a Romanesque episcopal castle, a baroque church, the Pont Vell and a pottery museum fill half a day. Its real value is as a low-cost base for the medieval villages around it — Peratallada, Ullastret, Monells, Cruïlles — which are hard to reach without a car. Come for the market and the August festival, not for beaches.
