Kyoto is a walking-cluster city, not temple bingo: one or two clusters a day, bags never on a city bus.
Kyoto rewards early starts in one walking cluster at a time. It punishes cross-city zig-zags, 28-inch suitcases on buses, and plans that treat a 12:30 table as optional. Four walking clusters plus the covered downtown (the rain-day base) cover a first visit; everything else is a day-trip or a second trip.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Temples and shrines: Bow at the gate, keep to the side of the path, rinse your hands at the basin before the hall; hats off inside.
- Shoes: Off wherever there is a step-up, a shoe rack or slippers; never on tatami in slippers. Carry clean socks.
- Queueing: Line up at the painted marks on platforms and bus stops; board and pay as the bus signs say.
- Tipping: None. Money left on the table will be brought back to you.
- Eating while walking: Signed as not allowed on many temple approaches and in Nishiki: eat at the stall.
- Gion: Do not follow, block or photograph maiko and geiko; signed private lanes carry fines.
- Noise: Phones silent on trains and buses, no calls; keep voices low in residential lanes at night.
Red lines
- Gion private lanes: photography restrictions and fines apply in signed alleys.
- No eating while walking in temple approaches where signed.
- Shoes off where indicated; carry socks.
Scams and watch-outs
- Bars in Gion and Pontochō without posted prices can add seat and service charges: ask for the price before you sit.
- People in monk robes asking for donations near major temples are not affiliated with those temples.
- Rickshaw rides: agree the route, the length and the total price before you start.
