Kyogle
Give Kyogle one night as a rail stop or a Border Ranges base, not a destination in itself: the town is 30 km from Casino and the park is up the hill (drive time check).
Kyogle is a small Northern Rivers town of about 2,200 on the Summerland Way, 30 km north of Casino and on the once-daily Brisbane–Sydney XPT. It works as a quiet base for the Border Ranges and Gondwana rainforest walks, and as a request stop on the train line, but the northbound train calls in the middle of the night. Most travellers see it in a night or as a lunch stop between Casino and the Queensland border.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- The XPT is a request stop: book your ticket or the train will not stop.
- The northbound train calls at Kyogle around 2:46 AM; only the southbound call is usable.
- Border Ranges roads are narrow and unlit (check current conditions); avoid driving them after dark and after heavy rain.
- Mobile coverage in the ranges is patchy (check); download maps before you leave town.
- Fuel and food options thin out north of Casino (check); fill up before heading north.
Kyogle is a quiet country town and violent crime is rare. The real risks are wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk, unlit range roads, summer storms and flash flooding on the Summerland Way: check Live Traffic NSW before driving.
