Kuwait City is a morning-and-evening city: do the mosque and souq before 11:00, spend the midday in a museum or a mall, and take a taxi between every cluster.

Kuwait City's sights are close together on the map but sit on car roads with few crossings, and the weather decides the day. The trips that go wrong walk in July, arrive with a visa still pending, or assume alcohol is served anywhere. Four small clusters cover a first visit: the souq, the mosque quarter, the museum strip on the Gulf Road and the Al Hamra tower area.

KWI to the city: one ride-hailing car or airport taxi, 25–45 minutes depending on the ring roads — the risk is a visa that is not approved before you fly.

Walk inside a cluster in the cool months; ride-hailing car or licensed taxi between clusters.

Passes
No pass. Short taxi rides inside the centre are cheap; see the fare in the app or agree it before you ride.
Late at night
No metro. Ride-hailing runs all night; availability drops in heavy rain and at prayer times.

Walk-in grills and tea in the souq lanes; go after 17:30, or for a late breakfast; noon is hot and many stalls shut for the midday rest.

First-timers: hotels near the souq and the Gulf Road, a car ride from everything; choose one with a 24h desk and a lift.
Sharq and Al Hamra
Modern towers with lifts and malls; better for a quiet room and a mall midday, and a 10-minute car ride from the souq.

Language

Arabic is the official language, with the Kuwaiti Gulf dialect in daily use. English is widely spoken in malls, hotels and business; most service workers are from South Asia, Egypt or the Philippines.

  • Street signs are in Arabic and English, but addresses use block, street and building numbers — save them exactly.

Etiquette

  • Greeting: 'As-salamu alaykum'; handshake with men; wait for a woman to offer her hand; avoid: Hugging or kissing strangers
  • Right hand: Eat, pass and receive with the right hand; avoid: Using the left hand for food
  • Diwaniya: Accept an invitation to a diwaniya (men's evening gathering); sit, drink coffee, listen; avoid: Leaving abruptly or showing the soles of your feet
  • Mosques: Visit on the official tour, covered, shoes off; avoid: Walking in front of worshippers
  • Politics: Listen; avoid: Criticising the Emir, religion or the war
  • Ramadan: Wish people 'Ramadan kareem'; accept iftar invitations; avoid: Eating, drinking or smoking in public by day

Red lines

  • Alcohol and drugs: banned; no exceptions for visitors.
  • Grand Mosque: covered shoulders and knees, scarf for women, shoes off; visiting hours are set.
  • Do not photograph government buildings, military sites or people without asking.

  • Fake visa sites: Apply only on the Ministry of Interior portal; agent sites add large fees.
  • Unlicensed taxis: Use the official airport queue or ride-hailing; agree fares before getting in.
  • Street money changers: Use ATMs and licensed exchange houses.
  • Fake conflict 'evacuation' or flight offers: Use only your airline, your embassy and official Kuwaiti sources.
  • Bootleg alcohol offers: Refuse: buying or holding alcohol is a criminal offence, and homemade spirits have caused deadly methanol poisonings.
