Kushiro
釧路市
Spend 1–2 days in Kushiro, one night enough to see the marsh, lake and seafood market.
Kushiro is Hokkaido's eastern gateway, famous for the expansive Kushiro Marsh (Shitsugen) and fresh seafood. With limited public transport, a short stay centered on the city and a day trip to the marsh works well.

- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags

- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Public transport schedules are Japanese‑only and infrequent; plan ahead.
- Mosquitoes are abundant in summer at the marsh; bring repellent.
- Winter snow can block roads; check road conditions if traveling Jan–Feb.
