Kushinagar is where the Buddha died, one of the four char dham sites of his life along with Lumbini, Bodh Gaya and Sarnath. The archaeological core — the Mahaparinirvana Temple with its reclining Buddha, the Matha Kuar Shrine, the Ramabhar Stupa and the relic distribution site — plus a small museum and monasteries built by Thailand, Japan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, China and Tibet, all sit within walking distance. Pilgrims come for a night or two; there is no town life to hold you longer.
