Kushimoto
串本町
Go for 1–2 nights only if you dive, hike the Kumano Kodo coast or want Honshu's southern tip; otherwise skip it as a day trip from Shirahama.
Kushimoto is a small coastal town on the southern tip of Honshu, about 2 h 10 min by limited express from Wakayama. Its draw is the sea: coral dive sites protected under the Ramsar Convention, the Hashigui-Iwa rock line, and Cape Shiono-Misaki, the southernmost point of the main island. Sights are spread along Route 42, so a car or bus matters more than a train pass.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Many restaurants and small shops take cash only: withdraw before you arrive.
- Route 42 is narrow and winding with steep drops to the sea; drive with care in rain.
- Summer weekends bring heavy beach traffic from Osaka; expect delays on Route 42.
- Bus services to the cape and O-shima are sparse; a missed bus can strand you for hours.
A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are winding coastal roads, sparse buses and cash-only businesses. Keep enough yen for the day and check the last bus before heading to the cape.
