Kuşadası

Base here 2 nights for the beach and Ephesus: dolmuş to Ephesus about 20 min, ferry to Samos from the harbour, no need for a car.

Kuşadası is a beach resort on the Central Aegean coast, 95 km south of İzmir, built around a harbour that cruise ships and ferries use. The town itself has few antiquities; its value is the long sandy beaches, the dolmuş network and the 20-minute run to Ephesus. Two nights covers the beach and the ruins; add a third for the Dilek Peninsula or a Samos day-trip.

Get around

Dolmuş minibuses run up and down the coast strip and to Selçuk and Ephesus; flag one down in the direction you are going. Taxis are plentiful but the plate must start with 09 T. The otogar sits on the D515 at the east edge of town, so you need a taxi or dolmuş to reach your hotel.

Etiquette

  • Greeting: Handshake; 'Merhaba' (hello) or 'Selamün aleyküm' in conservative areas; cheek kisses between friends of the same sex; avoid: Offering a hand to a conservative woman first — wait for hers

  • Kadı Kalesi fortress has been closed to the public: check before walking out.
  • The Samos ferry runs Apr–Oct only, and the return leg does not allow a day-trip from Samos to Kuşadası.

A busy resort town and generally safe for tourists. The real risks are pickpockets on crowded beaches, fake taxis (plate must start with 09 T), summer heat and unlicensed touts selling boat and Ephesus trips: agree the price first.
