Kurri Kurri
Go for half a day: walk the 55 town murals and the Big Kookaburra, then leave. Sleep in Cessnock or Maitland, not here.
Kurri Kurri is a former coal town in the Hunter Valley, now known for the painted murals on its shopfronts and the 4.5 m Big Kookaburra on Lang Street. It is a small town of about 6,000 people, 30-40 minutes by road from Cessnock and Maitland. Most travellers see it as a two-to-three hour stop on the way to the vineyards, or a short detour from the Hunter Expressway.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer days pass 35°C and shade on the main street is limited: walk the murals before 11:00 or after 16:00.
- The Richmond Vale Railway Museum runs on limited days and is volunteer-run: check opening before driving out.
- Pubs and cafés close early in the evening; do not count on a late meal in town.
- Kangaroos and wombats on rural roads at dusk: drive slowly after sunset.
A quiet, low-crime country town; the real risks are summer heat, early-closing kitchens and wildlife on rural roads at dusk.
