Kuressaare
Give Kuressaare 2 nights: one full day for the castle and spa, one for the coast. Skip it as a day trip from Tallinn — 4 h each way.
Kuressaare is the capital of Saaremaa and the island's only town of any size, about 13,000 people. Almost everything a visitor wants sits inside a 15-minute walk: the episcopal castle and its moat, a park, a long line of spa hotels and the small grid of wooden houses around Raekoja plats. Come for two nights in June–August, or one night off-season when the spas are cheaper and the castle is quiet. It is a base for the island, not a stop on the way to somewhere else.

Get around
The centre is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. Local buses cover Kudjape, the airport and the harbour, but run thinly in the evening. A car or bike is what makes the rest of Saaremaa work: windmills at Angla, the Kaali crater, Muhu and the beaches are 20–60 km out.
