Kure Beach
Give Kure Beach 2 nights: one full beach day, one for Fort Fisher and the aquarium. Skip it as a base if you want walkable dining — you need a car.
Kure Beach is a small beach town on Pleasure Island, 20–30 minutes south of Wilmington by car. The town is about 2 km wide, so everything sits within a short walk of the sand. Come for a slow beach stay with two real sights — Fort Fisher and the state aquarium — rather than for nightlife or a restaurant strip.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov, peaking Aug–Oct: check forecasts and know your refund terms before booking.
- Rip currents are the main beach hazard; swim near lifeguards and follow posted flag warnings.
- Parking near the pier and beach accesses fills early on summer weekends and is enforced — read the signs.
- Many small motels and restaurants close or cut hours in winter; confirm before a cold-season trip.
- Sales tax is added at checkout; the price on the menu or tag is not the final one.
Kure Beach is a low-crime small town; the real risks are rip currents, summer heat and storms. Swim near lifeguards, watch the flag warnings, and keep an eye on hurricane forecasts from June to November.
