Give Kurashiki one night, or a half-day from Okayama: the canal storehouse district is 10 min on foot from the station and done in 3–4 h.
Kurashiki is an Edo-period merchant town on the San'yo line, 15 min by local train from Okayama and about 1 h 45 min from Kyoto. The Bikan Historic Area — a canal lined with white-walled rice storehouses and mills — is the reason to come, and it is small enough to walk in an afternoon. The rest of the city is a spread-out concrete grid; Kojima, on the coast, is a separate half-day for jeans and Seto Ohashi bridge views.

- Most museums and many shops in the Bikan area close on Mondays — quieter, but plan the Ohara Museum for another day.
- Kojima, Washuzan and Tamashima are too far apart to walk between; budget bus or train time or you will lose the afternoon.
- Kurashiki Station and Shin-Kurashiki Station are 8 km apart — check which one your ticket names before you book a hotel.
- Canal-side restaurants fill at lunch; the storehouse streets have little shade in midsummer.
